Driver who fled a VIO kills pregnant woman in Jos.

A heavily pregnant woman, Ruth Nen Maurice, was killed in a fatal collision involving a driver who was allegedly trying to escape officials from the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO) in Jos, the capital of Plateau State.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, in the city centre, according to eyewitnesses. The driver was reported to have attempted a dangerous maneuver while evading a VIO checkpoint, striking the woman who was standing by the roadside waiting for transport to a hospital for antenatal care.

Ewan Boss Julz Odumu, a close friend of the deceased, posted the tragic news on Facebook on Wednesday. He described the driver’s reckless actions and the impact on Ruth, who was carrying twins and was close to delivery at the time of the accident.

“Ruth Nen Maurice… My dear, it’s hard to post this but God knows best,” Odumu wrote. He added that the unborn babies never had the chance to experience the world because of the driver’s recklessness.

Plateau State Police Command spokesperson DSP Alfred Alabo confirmed the incident and stated that the driver has been arrested. He said an investigation has begun and the suspect will face court charges once the inquiry concludes.

Attempts to obtain a statement from the state Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer, Mr. Jonathan Zam, were unsuccessful, as he did not answer calls or respond to messages sent to his phone.
