DR Congo Showed Courage and Resilience Against Portugal in the 2026 World Cup.

DR Congo midfielder Yoane Wissa said his side displayed remarkable courage and resilience after earning a historic 1‑1 draw with Portugal in the opening match of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Wissa, who is a Newcastle United player, netted the equaliser just before halftime at Houston’s NRG Stadium.

Portugal opened the scoring in the sixth minute when midfielder João Neves headed in a goal. Despite dominating possession, the Portuguese side failed to create clear chances.

In the fifth minute of first‑half stoppage time, Wissa was left unmarked and capitalised on a cross from Arthur Masuaku, heading home DR Congo’s first World Cup goal from six yards out.

Speaking about the result against the European power, he said the squad held their ground against a stronger opponent.

Wissa also dedicated the point and goal to his country, emphasising the importance of fighting for the people back home.

“I’m obviously very proud today (Wednesday) because we’ve worked extremely hard. It was a very difficult match against a team that was stronger than us.”
