The Obong of Calabar, His Eminence Edidem Ekpo Okon Abasi Otu V, urged political leaders—particularly elected officials—to put the interests of Nigerians first, rather than personal gain.

He made the appeal on Tuesday when a delegation from the State Executive Committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) visited his palace in Calabar as part of a courtesy visit.

Otu said that peace and development can only flourish where mutual respect, dialogue and responsible leadership prevail.

He praised the delegation for acknowledging the significance of the traditional institution, noting that the palace remains a symbol of unity and cultural heritage for the Efik Kingdom and Cross River State as a whole.

The Obong further urged political actors to conduct their activities peacefully and in ways that promote harmony among the people, adding that traditional institutions will continue to serve as custodians of peace, justice and societal values.

He expressed gratitude for the visit and assured the party leadership of the palace’s ongoing support for all efforts aimed at the progress, stability and development of Cross River State.

Earlier, the party’s state chairman, Christopher S. Eta, said the delegation had come to the palace to pay homage to the revered throne and strengthen the relationship between the party and the traditional institution.

He added that traditional rulers remain critical stakeholders in society, especially in fostering peace, stability and community development.

According to Eta, the visit also offered the party leadership an opportunity to engage with the palace and better appreciate the role traditional institutions play in politics, governance and electioneering processes.

“We have come to identify with the throne, pay our respects to the palace and acknowledge the important role our traditional institutions continue to play in maintaining peace, unity and stability within our communities,” the APC chairman said. “Their contributions to the democratic process and overall development of society cannot be overlooked,” he added.
