Democracy Day: US shuts embassy in Lagos, Abuja

The United States has announced that it will close its diplomatic offices in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria made the announcement in a notice released on Friday.

The closures are being observed in commemoration of Democracy Day, which falls on June 12.

“The U.S. Embassy in Abuja and Consulate General in Lagos will be closed on Friday, June 12, 2026, in observance of the Democracy Day holiday,” the U.S. Mission stated.

Friday has also been declared a public holiday by the Nigerian government.

In a message on Democracy Day, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu urged Nigerians to continue believing in their country despite its challenges.
