Cucurella: It Was Hard to Turn Down Real Madrid’s Offer

Spain defender Marc Cucurella revealed that rejecting an offer from Real Madrid was a challenging decision.

Cucurella moved to Real Madrid from Chelsea for a transfer fee of €60 million (£52 m) and signed a six‑year contract that will keep him at the Bernabéu through 2032.

The deal was completed in about a day and a half, after direct contact and encouragement from the club’s new manager, José Mourinho.

‘It all happened very quickly,’ Cucurella said while on Spain duty at the World Cup. ‘I’m very happy about this new chapter.

‘It was very fast. They called me in the morning and told me the clubs had already agreed. I had no doubts – it was a big step in my career. We had it done in a day, so now I can focus on the World Cup.

‘In the end, you have to respect all opinions,’ he said. ‘Everyone has their own.

‘I’m grateful for everything I experienced in Barcelona, but there are different phases in life. When Real Madrid wants you, it’s very difficult to turn them down. I had no doubt that it was the right move, and I’m very happy with this decision.

‘It’s another step, a very important one. Real Madrid is a great club, one of the best, and the pressure will be immense. When you go to a club like that, it’s for the titles – they have 15 Champions Leagues, so hopefully I can win one with them.

‘My career hasn’t been easy, and having the opportunity to go to Real Madrid is a wonderful thing, a great way to cap off my career. I hope I can lift trophies.’
