Children’s Day stampede: Edo Govt begins investigation as police interrogate bouncer

The Edo State Government has announced that an investigation into the stampede that took place at Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium on Wednesday, during this year’s Children’s Day celebration, has begun. The incident left several students with varying degrees of injury.

The government also said that the bouncer involved is currently being questioned by police to determine the immediate or remote cause of the incident.

According to DAILY POST, Dr. Patrick Ebojele, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, made the statement while reacting to the event in Benin City.

In explaining what led to the incident, Ebojele said the chaos was triggered by some excited children who behaved unruly at one of the stadium’s gates.

He added that the disorder prompted one of the bouncers to use tear gas to disperse the students, which in turn caused a “kind of stampede.”

During the ensuing pandemonium, a number of students were injured.

He noted that thousands of eager children had filled the stadium to participate in the day’s activities, an unprecedented turnout. All entrances were opened to allow children access.

Ebojele explained that State Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa, who was physically present, immediately stepped in to provide first aid to the children.

Those needing further care were taken to Edo Specialist Hospital, where they received appropriate medical attention and have since been safely returned to their families.

The Governor’s media aide reiterated the state government’s commitment to the safety and security of all, including children.

The Chief Press Secretary described the incident as an isolated case at large gatherings and said it would not diminish Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to child safety and well‑being.

“The Governor’s unparalleled investment in education is the reason for the huge attendance by students of different schools in the state to celebrate Children’s Day,” he said.

He praised the security personnel, medical staff, and volunteers for their swift response and dedication, noting that their immediate actions helped to quell the tension.

He also urged social media users to refrain from spreading unverified narratives that could cause unnecessary panic in the state.
