Celtic Beat Motherwell 3‑2 After Iheanacho’s Late Penalty, Keeping Title Hopes Alive

Kelechi Iheanacho converted a VAR‑assisted penalty nine minutes into stoppage time, securing a 3‑2 comeback victory for Celtic over Motherwell on Wednesday night, according to RTE.

The penalty was awarded after former Hearts midfielder Sam Nicholson was called for handball when he jumped to head the ball away; the ball appeared to strike his raised hand in front of his head.

Earlier, former Hearts player Liam Gordon had given his old club a significant advantage in the title race by scoring an 85th‑minute equaliser.

Celtic entered the match needing a three‑goal margin over the Jambos to secure the title, and they did not look poised to win until referee John Beaton was consulted by video assistant Andrew Dallas with five minutes of stoppage time remaining.

Beaton signalled the penalty, and Iheanacho calmly converted it, sealing the win and prompting a pitch invasion by the visiting supporters.

Motherwell had been on the verge of a European qualification earlier in the match, but the penalty drama was intensified by Hibernian’s late winner at Ibrox; they will now have to avoid defeat at Easter Road on Saturday to secure fourth place.

Hearts must now avoid defeat in their away match against Celtic on Saturday to win the title, after a 3‑0 home victory over a depleted Falkirk preserved their one‑point lead at the summit.
