Former Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusufu Buratai (Rtd) praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving the N1.245 trillion Gombe‑Biu Highway dualisation project, calling it a major infrastructure development for the North‑East.
Buratai thanked the President for reviving the strategic highway, originally built in 1962, and said the project demonstrates the administration’s commitment to infrastructure and regional connectivity under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
The former Army Chief noted that the 139‑kilometre highway will be upgraded with rigid pavement technology, which should improve transport, facilitate trade and strengthen economic integration across the North‑East.
He added that the upgrade could create new opportunities for businesses and local communities by improving access and reducing travel difficulties along the corridor.
Buratai also commended Minister of Works Senator David Umahi and the governors of Gombe and Borno, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya and Babagana Umara Zulum, for their support and collaboration in advancing the project.
He said the highway will have strategic value beyond economic development, enhancing logistics and mobility across the region.
According to him, better road infrastructure would support the movement of personnel, equipment and supplies, contributing to broader efforts to improve security and stability in the North‑East.
Buratai described the project as a significant investment in regional development, connectivity and economic growth, urging residents and stakeholders to support its successful implementation.
He expressed optimism that the project would deliver long‑term benefits for communities along the corridor and contribute to the socio‑economic development of the region.
