The Anambra State Government has brought eight pastors before court after their arrests in Onitsha, Awka, and other parts of the state.

The arraignment took place at the state judiciary complex in Awka.

Mr. Ejimofor Opara, a media adviser to the Anambra State Governor, described the clerics as “fake pastors” and said they had violated the 2025 Homeland Security Law.

Enacted in February 2025, the law prohibits certain religious practices that are considered harmful to the public, particularly those related to wealth creation.

Last year, several native doctors who promoted get‑rich‑quick schemes were also arrested. While some have been prosecuted and jailed, others remain in trial.

The eight pastors arraigned on Friday are Peter Chukwu, Chinedu Egwuonwu, Bishop Emeka Nwankpa, Ebele Nnachukwu, Ekeleme Chris Ugochukwu, Ndubisi Nnachukwu, Miracle Iruoma, and Chukwukadibia Ogwuama.

State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice Tobechukwu Nweke, SAN, is heading the prosecution against the suspects.
