Members of the National Working Committee (NWC) led by David Mark, representing the African Democratic Congress (ADC), staged a protest at the Federal High Court in Abuja. They urged the judiciary to avoid being used as a tool to suppress opposition parties in Nigeria.

The demonstration comes as the ADC remains embroiled in a legal dispute between the David Mark faction and the group headed by Nafiu Bala.

Protesters claimed that Bala’s lawsuit, which the Supreme Court sent back to the Federal High Court, is a diversion intended to distract the opposition party.

In April, the apex court overturned a Court of Appeal order in Abuja that had directed the parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum in the leadership struggle. That decision prompted the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to derecognise David Mark’s leadership of the party.

The Supreme Court, in a unanimous judgment by a five‑member panel, ordered the parties to return to the Federal High Court for a swift hearing of the suit filed by the aggrieved party chieftain, Nafiu Bala.
