Bomb blast hits Lagos material market; police reassure residents of safety

Commissioner of Police for Lagos State Command, Mr. Fatai Tijani, reassured residents that a commercial area in Lagos remains safe after a bomb explosion suspected to be an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) caused brief panic.

He delivered the reassurance on Monday, speaking to journalists at the incident site—the Shoe Materials Market in Mushin—following a thorough sweep by security operatives.

According to him, police were alerted to an explosion and promptly dispatched Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operatives to cordon off and secure the area.

“We promptly deployed our EOD team after receiving reports of an explosion. The area was cordoned off and thoroughly searched,” he said.

He explained that preliminary findings suggested the explosion was caused by an IED planted beneath a vehicle.

Tijani said the device was positioned beneath the vehicle’s passenger side and detonated when the engine was started.

“The IED was under the vehicle by the passenger side. It exploded when the vehicle was started,” he stated.

He said one person was injured in the incident and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
