Black Stars Extend Losing Streak with 2-0 Loss to Mexico

The Ghana Black Stars were defeated 2‑0 by Mexico in an international friendly played in Puebla on Friday, according to the Ghana Football Association. The loss extends Ghana’s losing streak to three consecutive matches as the teams continue to prepare for the 2026 FIFA World Cup in June.

Ghana had previously lost both friendly matches in March, a 5‑1 defeat to Austria followed by a narrow 2‑1 loss to Germany, the four‑time World Cup champions.

The match offered coach Desmond Ofei an opportunity to assess his squad and gave new players a chance to impress ahead of the final World Cup squad announcement.

Benjamin Asare retained his place between the posts, supported by a back four of Jan Kwasi Gyamerah, Nathaniel Adjei, Oscar Oppong and Terry Yegbe. In midfield, Emmanuel Agyei, captain Majeed Ashimeru, Ibrahim Osman and Jesurun Rak‑Sakyi started, while Daniel Agyei and Felix Afena‑Gyan were the forwards in a 4‑4‑2 formation.

Mexico opened the scoring when Brian Gutiérrez netted within the first two minutes. Ghana managed a composed response, but Mexico controlled the ball and entered halftime with a 1‑0 advantage after an impressive first‑half performance.

Guillermo Martínez doubled Mexico’s lead in the 54th minute. Ofei made several second‑half substitutions, but they were insufficient to alter the outcome.

Prince Amoako, Jerry Afriyie and Razak Simpson replaced Jesurun Rak‑Sakyi, Daniel Agyei and Felix Afena‑Gyan in the 66th minute. Later, Majeed Ashimeru, Ibrahim Osman, Emmanuel Agyei and Benjamin Asare were substituted for Abdul Aziz Issah, Joseph Opoku, Salim Adams and Solomon Agbasi.

Although the changes injected fresh energy into Ghana’s attack, Mexico maintained control and secured the win.

Ghana will now turn its attention to a friendly against Wales in Cardiff on June 2, 2026.

Drawn in Group L, the Black Stars will face Panama, Croatia and 1966 World Cup champions England.

The national team’s four‑time African Cup of Nations champions recently appointed Carlos Queiroz, who succeeded Otto Addo.

At the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ghana exited the group stage after a 3‑2 victory over South Korea and defeats of 3‑2 to Portugal and 2‑0 to Uruguay.
