Benue Governor Alia Signs Electricity Law

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia, has assented to the Benue State Electricity Law, 2026, a landmark piece of legislation designed to strengthen electricity generation, transmission and distribution throughout the state.

The announcement came in a statement released by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Tersoo Kula.

Governor Alia signed the bill into law on Monday during a ceremony held at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House in Makurdi.

According to the government, the new law establishes a legal framework aimed at improving access to electricity, attracting investment and accelerating industrial development in Benue State.

Officials said the legislation is expected to enhance power supply to homes, businesses, schools and healthcare facilities by encouraging greater participation in electricity generation and distribution.

The government also noted that improved electricity infrastructure would help stimulate economic activities by attracting investors, supporting industry growth and creating employment opportunities, particularly for young people.

In addition, the law is expected to reduce operating costs for businesses by lowering dependence on generators and other alternative power sources, thereby improving productivity and competitiveness.

The legislation further provides measures to safeguard electricity consumers through stronger enforcement of consumer rights, fair billing practices, improved service delivery and more efficient resolution of complaints.

The state government said the law would also support rural electrification efforts by extending power infrastructure to underserved communities, with anticipated benefits for healthcare, education, agriculture and security.

Authorities expressed confidence that implementing the law would drive sustainable economic growth, improve living standards and position Benue State for increased industrialisation.
