APC’s Rabiu Aiki wins Zuru Assembly by-election

By Haruna Aliyu, Birnin Kebbi

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Rabiu Garba Aiki of the All Progressives Congress (APC) the winner of the Zuru State Constituency by‑election for the Kebbi State House of Assembly.

At the collation centre, the Returning Officer and Collation Officer, Professor Muhammad Bashar Danladi of the Federal University Birnin Kebbi, announced that Aiki received 4,871 votes, defeating the Labour Party (LP) candidate, Aliyu Galadima Muhammad, who secured 168 votes.

INEC reported that the constituency has 109,385 registered voters, with 5,156 voters accredited for the by‑election. A total of 5,055 valid votes were cast, and 95 votes were rejected.

Professor Danladi noted that the APC candidate held a commanding lead across all 10 wards in the constituency, winning every area.

The by‑election was held to fill the vacancy left by the death of former Speaker of the Kebbi State House of Assembly, Muhammad Usman Zuru.

Results showed that Aiki achieved his highest vote count in Rafin Zuru Ward, where he polled 1,042 votes against the LP candidate’s 63 votes. He also won Bedi Ward with 830 votes, Senchi Ward with 659 votes, and Manga‑Ushe Ward with 637 votes.

Voter turnout was generally low across the constituency, although voting and collation proceeded peacefully.

With this outcome, the APC retains the Zuru State Constituency seat in the Kebbi State House of Assembly.
