A founding member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, Mezie Chiekwe Esiaga, has warned his party that it must resolve the crisis stemming from its governorship primary or it could face a significant defeat in the 2027 elections.
Esiaga, speaking about the party’s prospects in the 2027 polls, claimed that Eric Opah, who secured the APC governorship ticket, was imposed on members by the state leadership.
He also said that the process that produced Opah as the candidate in May 2026 lacked credibility, arguing that many APC members might not support the party’s chances in 2027 if the current candidate’s name appears on the ballot.
According to Esiaga, the governorship primary was actually won by former Minister of State for Science and Technology Henry Ikoh, not by Opah.
He warned that the APC could suffer a major defeat in Abia in 2027 if the ticket is not returned to the former minister.
Responding to Esiaga’s allegations, the APC Publicity Secretary in Abia State, Uche Aguoru, said that a candidate’s emergence follows a party primary election, not propaganda.
Aguoru advised Esiaga to wait for the APC National Working Committee to release the full list of candidates and dismissed the prediction of an APC defeat in Abia.
The publicity secretary also denied claims that Eric Opah had become a party member only two weeks before emerging as the APC governorship candidate.
