Akpabio urges unity against insecurity

By Henry Umoru, Abuja

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, urged Nigerians to join forces in the fight against terrorism, kidnapping and other violent crimes, emphasizing that security depends on the collective vigilance and cooperation of the citizenry.

The appeal came on Sunday in Abuja during an inter‑denominational church service at the National Christian Centre, part of the 27th Democracy Day celebrations.

Addressing the theme “Democracy, Faith and the Soul of a Nation,” Akpabio highlighted the ongoing threat posed by the abduction of innocent people, especially children, and called for sustained action from the government, security agencies and communities.

He urged citizens to stay alert, collaborate with security forces and support initiatives that enhance safety nationwide.

According to Akpabio, while the government remains committed to tackling insecurity, the public also has a vital role in strengthening community security and backing lawful efforts to curb criminal activity.

He added that democracy should transcend elections, resting on accountability, justice, compassion and service to the common good.

Leadership, he said, is a public trust and governance a responsibility aimed at improving citizens’ lives.

Akpabio encouraged Nigerians to remain hopeful amid current challenges, expressing confidence in the country’s democratic future and its capacity for renewal.

He called on young people to engage actively in democratic processes and contribute positively to nation‑building through innovation, civic engagement and constructive participation in public affairs.

Further, he stressed national unity, asserting that Nigeria’s diversity is a strength that can drive progress and stability.

He offered prayers for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, public institutions, security agencies and citizens, hoping for continued peace, development and democratic growth.

The Democracy Day service brought together government officials, religious leaders and other stakeholders to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and aspirations for national development.
