•Crop productions dominates with N8.9trn

The agricultural sector, which includes crop production, livestock, forestry, and fishing, registered a 3.15 percent year‑on‑year rise in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to N11.87 trillion in the first quarter of 2026 (Q1’26), up from N11.51 trillion in Q1’25.
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) released this figure in its Q1’26 GDP report. Crop production remained the sector’s largest contributor, adding N8.9 trillion in Q1’26, a 3.39 percent increase from N8.6 trillion in Q1’25.
Further detail shows the livestock sub‑sector grew to N1.57 trillion in Q1’26, a 2.20 percent rise from N1.54 trillion in Q1’25, while forestry expanded 4.14 percent to N589.88 billion in Q1’26 from N566.42 billion in Q1’25.
The fishing sub‑sector recorded a 1.72 percent year‑on‑year increase, reaching N792.92 billion in Q1’26 from N779.49 billion in Q1’25.
In its Q1’26 GDP report, the NBS noted: “Four sub‑activities make up the Agricultural sector: Crop Production, Livestock, Forestry, and Fishing. The sector grew by 9.93 percent year‑on‑year in nominal terms in Q1 2026, a 0.11‑point decline from the same quarter of 2025. Compared with the preceding quarter’s 6.82 percent growth rate, there was a 3.11‑point increase. Crop production remained the major driver of the sector, accounting for 66.76 percent of the overall nominal value of the sector in the first quarter of 2026.”
Quarter‑on‑quarter growth stood at –36.37 percent in Q1 2026. Agriculture contributed 18.11 percent to nominal GDP in Q1 2026, lower than the 19.40 percent recorded in Q1 2025 and the 25.67 percent in Q4 2025.
“The agricultural sector in Q1 2026 grew by 3.15 percent (year‑on‑year) in real terms, an increase of 3.08 percent points from the corresponding period of 2025, and a decrease of 0.85 percent points from the preceding quarter, which recorded a growth rate of 4.00 percent,” the NBS added.
“It grew on a quarter‑on‑quarter basis at –35.24 percent. However, the sector contributed 23.16 percent to aggregate GDP in real terms in Q1 2026, lower than the contribution in Q1 2025 (23.33 percent) and Q4 2025 (28.66 percent). ”
