Adidas runs out of letter ‘V’ as German fans snap up World Cup shirts

Adidas said on Wednesday that replica World Cup shirts for several German players were briefly out of stock because the letter “V” was in short supply amid strong fan demand.

The company, which supplies kits for the German national team, explained that supporters rushing to buy shirts of Kai Havertz, Deniz Undav and Aleksandar Pavlovic had exhausted the available “V” characters.

“There were short‑term shortages in the availability of the letter ‘V’,” a spokesman told AFP.

He added that the issue was quickly resolved and that football tops featuring the “V” would soon be available for online ordering again.

Earlier that Wednesday, a customer attempting to purchase a Havertz shirt on Adidas’s online store received the message: “Sorry, we’re currently out of stock of the following characters: V.”

The shirts were back in stock later that day, priced at 170 euros ($198).

Adidas supplies kits for 14 of the 48 teams competing in this year’s World Cup and earns significant profits from tournament merchandise sales.

However, the German national team will end its partnership with Adidas in 2027, after more than 70 years and four World Cup victories, and will switch to Nike as its new kit supplier.
