Adepoju Questions Osimhen’s Leadership as Super Eagles Captain

Former Super Eagles midfielder Mutiu Adepoju says Victor Osimhen has yet to demonstrate the qualities required to be Nigeria’s national team captain, even though the striker has achieved great success wearing the Super Eagles jersey.

The call to appoint a new Nigeria captain arose after long‑time leaders William Troost‑Ekong and Ahmed Musa withdrew from international duty ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Their exits left head coach Eric Chelle responsible for selecting a permanent captain among a roster of seasoned stars.

The Galatasaray striker has become one of the squad’s most influential personalities, both inside the dressing room and on the field, and has positioned himself as Nigeria’s foremost attacking threat in recent years.

Nevertheless, Chelle ultimately awarded the captain’s armband to Wilfred Ndidi, with Osimhen and Moses Simon named as vice‑captains. Osimhen did, however, assume the captaincy in AFCON fixtures against Uganda and Morocco when Ndidi was absent.
