After rumours circulated that bandits were invading towns in Osun State, Governor Ademola Adeleke reassured residents that schools across the state are secure.

The rumours sparked tension in several towns, prompting parents in Ila, Ikirun, Obaagun and Osogbo to storm schools to retrieve their children, fearing kidnapping.

Viral videos showed students in some public schools in Ikirun fleeing their schools to avoid abduction.

In a statement released by spokesperson Olawale Rasheed on Tuesday, Governor Adeleke called the alleged invasion a false alert and urged citizens to continue their lawful activities without fear.

The governor blamed the rumours on “evil opposition elements” and said that fact‑checks from border areas and throughout the state found no evidence of kidnappings.

“I task our people to go about their normal activities without fear. Our government has taken steps to secure our schools. The Ministry of Education and the relevant security agencies have worked out a security strategy that is being implemented,” the governor said.

He also noted that the armoured personnel carriers his administration has refurbished are ready for deployment to bolster security across the state.

Osun Police Command spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi described the alleged bandit invasion as mere rumour and warned those spreading the false news to stop creating panic in the state.
