Former Kaduna Central Senator Shehu Sani criticized a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for attempting to enlist former President Goodluck Jonathan as its candidate for the 2027 presidential election.
In a post on his verified X account on Monday, Sani called the move “belated.” He was responding to the faction’s decision to nominate Jonathan ahead of the 2027 general election.
According to Sani, the group that is now promoting Jonathan’s candidacy failed to support him when the PDP was in a stronger position. He reiterated that the party had a better chance of mounting a serious electoral challenge in 2023.
“If they actually wanted Jonathan, they should have fielded him in 2023 when the party was relatively alive and in good shape,” Sani said. “They just now want him to help them carry the coffin.”
He added that the current move is less about giving Jonathan a realistic chance to return to power. Instead, it appears to be an attempt to use the former President’s political stature to revive a weakened platform.
