2027: APC evaluates Kwara governor for Senate candidacy

The Senatorial Aspirants’ Screening Committee of the All Progressives Congress has screened Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq as a candidate for the Kwara Central Senate seat ahead of the party’s 2027 primary elections.

Conducted in Abuja between May 9 and May 10, the screening formed part of the party’s internal vetting process to confirm aspirants’ eligibility and to ensure that prospective office‑seekers are free of legal or electoral impediments before the primaries.

Governor’s senior aide Bashira Kolawole confirmed the development during an exclusive interview with PUNCH Online in Ilorin on Tuesday.

“This information is true,” she said, declining to provide further details about the outcome of the screening exercise or the governor’s next political steps.

AbdulRazaq, slated to finish his constitutionally allowed two terms on May 29, 2027, is presently the only APC aspirant for the Kwara Central Senate ticket, reportedly being the sole party member who has purchased the nomination and expression‑of‑interest forms for the position.

This development signals the governor’s intention to stay active in the state’s political arena after his tenure ends, especially as competition for key elective offices ahead of 2027 gains momentum within the ruling party.

Meanwhile, incumbent Kwara Central Senator Salihu Mustapha has also secured the APC governorship nomination form, foreshadowing a competitive succession contest within the state chapter of the party.
