World Cup 2026: Ghana Bow Out After Slim Defeat To Colombia

The Black Stars of Ghana bowed out of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after suffering a narrow 1-0 defeat to Colombia at Kansas City Stadium.

Jhon Arias scored the decisive goal early in the contest as Colombia produced a composed and dominant display to book their place in the Round of 16.

Ghana threatened inside the opening two minutes when Thomas Partey unleashed a powerful long-range strike, but Colombia quickly took control of the game and dictated proceedings.

The South Americans made their superiority count in the 14th minute. Luis Suárez surged down the right flank before picking out Arias with a precise low cross, and the midfielder guided a first-time finish into the bottom corner to hand Néstor Lorenzo’s side the lead.

Ghana were fortunate not to trail by a wider margin before halftime. Luis Díaz missed a clear opportunity from inside the box, while goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi produced an outstanding reflex save to deny Johan Mojica’s powerful downward header.

Díaz thought he had doubled Colombia’s lead in the 56th minute after stretching to convert Santiago Arias’ cross, but the effort was ruled out for a marginal offside following a VAR review.

The forward was presented with another golden chance moments later, only to fire straight at Ati-Zigi from an unmarked position inside the penalty area.

A single goal ultimately proved decisive as Colombia remained defensively resolute, shutting out Ghana and preventing the Black Stars from registering a single shot on target.

Colombia will now face Switzerland in the Round of 16 in Vancouver on 7 July.
